Health Services

Health care in Canada is delivered through a publicly funded health care system, which means most services are free at the point of use and costs are paid through funding from income taxes. The guiding principle is to provide "universal coverage for medically necessary health care services provided on the basis of need, rather than the ability to pay".

In the Irish Loop this health care system is administered by Newfoundland and Labrador's Eastern Regional Health Authority (www.easternhealth.ca) which offers health and community services through community-based offices, medical clinics, and nursing homes.
Within the Irish Loop, the four main health care facilities are:
- Witless Bay Health and Community Services Centre
- Ferryland Health and Community Services Clinic
- Trepassey Community Health Clinic
- St. Mary's Health Centre

The main services provided at these facilities include:
- Family Doctor Care
- Nursing Services
- Laboratory and X-ray Services
- Emergency and Ambulatory Care
- Child, Youth and Family Services
- Mental Health and Addictions Programs
- Health Promotion

In addition to the health care facilities and services found within the region, residents of the Irish Loop often travel to St. John's where there are two major hospitals (the Health Sciences Centre - General Hospital and St. Clare's Mercy Hospital), as well as a wide range of specialist services.
